High School in China

Why China? The Start of My Journey

My decision to study in China was influenced in part by the presence of a dear friend, Sara, who was embarking on the same journey. Her friendship and support played a significant role in making my dream a reality. From a young age, growing up on a small island in Indonesia, I harbored a strong desire to study abroad. Although my dream was initially to study in Japan, fate had a different plan, leading me to a neighboring country instead.

So, Why Study Abroad Instead?

Studying abroad had always fascinated me, offering exciting challenges and new opportunities. I was deeply motivated by a desire to immerse myself in a foreign language and broaden my cultural horizons. This experience has been incredibly rewarding—I’ve made friends from all over the world and gained a deeper appreciation for the diverse cultures that surround me.

My natural curiosity and love for exploration pushed me to step out of my comfort zone. Deciding to travel overseas on my own at a young age was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It taught me the value of independence and the importance of seeking advice from books and experienced individuals. While my parents supported me from afar, this journey taught me to actively seek out answers and carve my own path in life. What was your first impression of China?

What If I Hadn’t Gone to China?

If I had not chosen to study in China, my alternative plan was to enroll in a boarding school in East Java, Indonesia. Everything was set in motion, with tuition fees paid and tickets already purchased. It was an exciting opportunity to further my education and embark on a new chapter of personal growth within my own country. Although it was a different path than originally envisioned, I was ready to embrace the experiences and opportunities that awaited me in East Java.

I was amazed by the pristine cleanliness of the surroundings; there wasn’t a single piece of litter in sight. However, being unable to communicate in the local language, I felt a bit intimidated by the distant demeanor of the locals. To add to my apprehension, all the signs and indications were in Chinese, making it challenging for me to venture out and explore on my own during the initial weeks of my stay. Navigating the unfamiliar landscape proved to be quite difficult.

Student Life in China

Experiencing life and pursuing my studies in China was an adventure I’ll never forget. Most of my fellow students were international, split between those from Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries. The school day was structured so differently from what I was used to back home in Indonesia, with our classes divided into three sessions instead of one.

My Daily Schedule

Here’s what my school life looked like:

  • 7:45 AM — Reading out loud with classmates
  • 8:00 AM – 12:15 PM — Morning lectures
  • 12:15 PM – 3:00 PM — Lunch break and a nap
  • 3:00 PM – 4:30 PM — Afternoon lectures
  • 4:30 PM – 7:30 PM — Time for exercise and dinner
  • 7:30 PM – 9:00 PM — Self-study session
  • 10:00 PM — Sleep and lights off

During my free time, one of my favorite things was exploring the city’s diverse cuisine. I loved indulging in bubble tea or savoring delicious barbecued skewers (shaokao) from street vendors just a short walk from school. I also found immense relaxation and joy in taking leisurely nature walks. With parks so easily accessible, I often spent entire afternoons strolling through the greenery, soaking in the beauty all around me.

The Best Parts of Being an International Student in China

Studying in China proved to be an incredible and enriching experience for me. The country’s distinct culture, aspirational outlook, and fascinating history captivated my interest. As an international student, I had the privilege of immersing myself in all these remarkable aspects of China.

In 2019, I had the pleasure of returning to China after five years since my studies, and I was amazed to witness the remarkable development the country had undergone. One of the most rewarding outcomes of my studies was the significant improvement in my language skills, surpassing my expectations. Additionally, I forged lifelong friendships with people from around the globe, particularly from Vietnam and Thailand, as a majority of my classmates hailed from those countries. Thanks to these connections, I had the opportunity to explore various destinations within China and its neighboring countries during my holiday.

How Studying Abroad Impacted My Career

Being an international student in China instilled in me a fearless outlook on life and opened doors to vast career prospects and extensive networks. Mastering different languages nurtured my ability to be open-minded and embrace diverse individuals, ultimately transforming my worldview.

Conclusion

Studying in China has been a life-changing experience, filled with invaluable lessons, unforgettable adventures, and lifelong friendships. For anyone considering studying abroad, China offers a unique blend of tradition and modernity that provides an enriching environment for personal and academic growth. If you are an international student or study abroad enthusiast, I highly recommend considering China as your destination.
